Thanksgiving
What are you thankful for?
We hear this asked in schools and churches and other public
settings this time of year, and the responses can sound cliché.
Assuredly, what we express thanks for is genuine and sincere.
The responses sound cliché, perhaps, because we only express
gratitude for basic things during this time of each year.
If you read quotes, anecdotes or devotionals
concerning Thanksgiving, they share a common theme.
Thankfulness is more than words expressed.
Being thankful comes from the heart and is a constant state
of being, shown in actions more than words.
It is not a stretch to link that notion of
constant thankfulness to the current economic climate.
Whether you have been directly impacted by the consequences
of a recessed economy or simply know someone who has been affected,
appreciation is not the first reaction.
However, it is therapeutic and a true measure of fortitude to
express sincere gratitude for not only the good things in your life
but also the challenges.
Every experience is an opportunity to build
character. It is a
chance to introspectively gaze into the inner mechanics of yourself,
your family, or your organization.
Whatever the case may be, cherish the opportunity difficult
times create. Be
grateful for the ability to persevere through such challenges.
And, thank God for the chance to do it all again and again.
It is not to suggest that such an attitude is
easy to conjure up, but here is a quote that gives perspective about
the general difficulties faced each day,
“The pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts.
No Americans have been more impoverished than these who,
nonetheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.”
